What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a situation requiring urgent care to relieve severe dental pain, alleviate bleeding, treat an infection, or save a damaged, loose, or knocked-out tooth. In some emergencies, time is of the essence. Prompt treatment can make the difference between saving or losing a tooth.

At Wisconsin Family Dental, we offer same-day appointments to ensure you receive the prompt dental care you require. If you need urgent dental services outside of our office hours, call our emergency number to speak with our emergency dentist for guidance. However, if you experience a life-threatening emergency, call 911 for assistance.

What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Here are the most common dental emergencies and things you can do to stabilize your condition while waiting for your emergency appointment:

Severe Toothache: Place a cold compress to alleviate swelling or discomfort and rinse your mouth with warm water. Floss around the painful area to dislodge any trapped food that may be the cause of the pain. Never place aspirin on the affected tooth to prevent damage to your gum tissues and tooth enamel.

Knocked-Out Tooth: A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if treated within an hour of injury. Hold the affected tooth by its crown and avoid touching it. Rinse it and try to return it to its socket. If that's not possible, carry the tooth in a small container of milk and head to your emergency dental appointment.

Soft Tissue Injuries: Place gentle pressure to stop any bleeding. If you can't control the bleeding, head to your nearest emergency room.

Other Dental Emergencies: If you have a cracked, broken, or chipped tooth, rinse with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you experience any other dental emergencies, including broken dentures, damaged restorations, or any other concerns, call our office to schedule an appointment.
